Sr. Salome Kamene

Archdiocesan Health Department Head of Commission

The HIV / AIDS programme is set to be enlarged reaching to the administrative districts of the Coast Province. Archbishop Boniface Lele took this initiative in collaboration with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD). The target groups are those infected and affected with HIV/ AIDS. Food supplements when available, and Anti Retro Viral (ARV) medication is supplied to supplement the meagre diet of these patients.

Important arms of this programme are the voluntary services from the Small Christian Communities (SCC). The “Wahuduma wa Afya” – community health servers, accompany nurses, comfort and counsel the patients and their families. The process of employing additional medical personnel and the expansion of the volunteer groups, who are being trained for their important role continues. Sr. Pauline Nthenya, who is backed by first hand experience of working with HIV/AIDS patients, heads the HIV/ AIDS Programme. Forming groups of clients for group therapy is our target.

ARCHDIOCESE OF MOMBASA CBHC & AIDS RELIEF PROJECT

The Archdiocese of Mombasa CBHC and AIDS Relief Project began in 1996 as an exclusively community based home care program providing, initially, medical care to HIV positive people and other sick-poor individuals. Volunteer CHWs (community health workers) from Catholic parishes form the “backbone” of the project leading nurses to the homes of their sick neighbours. Beginning in 1 parish the project has gradually expanded to 10 parishes in Mombasa City.

The Archdiocese has been serving many poor people for over fifty years now through health care services, nutrition programs, care of orphans and vulnerable children, offering shelter to the less fortunate, rehabilitation of street children and other many spiritual and charitable activities.  Today there are several programs and dispensaries which serve the sick-poor throughout the Archdiocese.

AIM of the CBHC & AIDS Relief Project:

The CBHC & AIDS Relief Project is a non-political and non-profit making organization whose aim is to render a community based, comprehensive and free service to People Living with HIV/AIDs (PLWHA), to provide free basic health services to other poor people in nine parishes in Mombasa and to promote good health generally.

MEDICAL OFFICE

The Archdiocese operates 15 small health units; two of which are health centres with maternity facilities. The coordination is achieved by Sr. Pauline Nthenya.
Within these health units, natural family planning and prevention of diseases are addressed. VCT are in operation in 6 health units.
