The Archdiocese of Mombasa is located in Coast Province, Kenya, which includes the government administrative districts of Mombasa, Kilindini, Kwale, Msabweni, Kinango, Kilifi, Taita and Taveta. The Archdiocese, formerly part of the Archdiocese of Nairobi, was established as an independent entity in May 1955. The archdiocese encompasses 30,432 square kilometers with an approximate population of 3 million. Among this number there are more than 300,000 Catholic faithful in 46 parishes. Most of the parishes are subdivided by “outstations” where people who live too far from the main parish church congregate to worship and participate in other Church activities.

Our Vision / Mission

With our Lord and Savior Jesus as our guide and inspiration we strive to create a just, loving and caring society that recognizes the dignity of the human person from the moment of conception to natural death.

Together with the Archbishop, we are servants of God and his people.

The Catholic Church overall purpose is to evangelize and be at the service of the people of God. Its faith and Mission calls the church to work for justice, serve those in need, and pursue peace and work towards the realization of the human dignity through upholding human rights.

HISTORY OF THE ARCHDIOCESE

The evangelization of the Kenyan – Tanganyika coast started from Zanzibar in 1889, through the initiative of Msgr. Armand Maupont, Bishop of St. Denis on the island of Reunion, in the Southern waters of the Indian Ocean, which was entrusted to the Holy Ghost Fathers.

During that period Msgr. Raoul de Courmont was appointed Vicar Apostolic of Zanzibar, and he sent Fr. Alexander Le Roy on an exploratory assignment to Mombasa, in 1885. In 1889 Fr. Le Roy finally settled in Mombasa, and the first Baptism in Mombasa was recorded on August 14, 1889 – Maria, the infant daughter of Diego and Natalia Pereira.

In 1892 Bura Mission in Taita – Taveta district was established, and later in 1904, Giriama Mission in Kilifi district was established. The present day Catholic population is made up of people from all over Kenya and beyond, Mombasa being the part of the country, and the coast area being the destinations of the majority of tourists to Kenya.
